Nov 2006 - Wildlife officials for Middle Island, Australia announce plans to use sheepdogs to protect the remaining Fairy Penguin population. Five years ago the Fairy Penguin population on the island was approximately 5000 birds. Today the Middle Island penguin population has dropped to approximately 100 penguins. Wild dogs and foxes have been decimating the Fairy Penguin population. This is a pilot program to see if sheepdogs can effectively protect the birds. Sheepdogs have been successfully used in other parts of Australia to protect free-range chickens from predators.
