The Emperor Penguin, eats mainly squid and fish. Natural predators of the Emperor penguin include killer whales and leopard seals.
Emperor penguins live in Antarctica, on and around the pack ice, between the south latitudes of sixty six and seventy eight degrees. (It is rumored that they would like to live somewhere warmer, like Madagascar, and eat sushi but...Emperor penguins can't fly or use chopsticks.)
Emperor penguins have bright yellow and orange coloring around the neck. They have white stomachs with black on their backs and heads. These tall penguins can reach proportions over four feet tall and weigh up to one hundred pounds.
Fun facts
Emperor penguins are the only species in the world to spend the entire winter in Antarctica.
Emperors time their breeding so that the breakup of the ice reaches them just when the baby penguins are ready to make their first trip to the ocean.
Emperors have sharp claws to grip the ice... This comes in handy when the Emperor colonies have to face blizzards of up to 200 kilometers per hour!
Emperors have 70 feathers per SQUARE INCH!!!
The Emperor male thinks that it’s sexy to display brilliant orange ear patches during courtship... apparently the females think so too, as the males haven't died off yet.
Emperor penguins lose up to half of their body weight while hatching their eggs and raising chicks. They get to eat very rarely as almost all of the food is devoted to feeding the chicks.
The Emperor has been known to occasionally panic and stampede resulting in the loss of hundreds of un-hatched eggs.
Emperors will group together to conserve heat, and in doing so, will become extremely densely packed; up to 10 penguins per square meter!
